Marriage counseling for the modern world
Couples come to me for a variety of reasons, such as: feeling disconnected from each other, not getting needs met in the relationship, continually fighting the same battles without resolution, betrayal of trust such as an affair, and difficulties with sex and intimacy.
If any of this sounds familiar to you, marriage therapy can help. I help couples address:
Communication issues
Conflict/crisis in the relationship
Highly escalated conflict
Affair recovery
Betrayal of trust
Deciding whether or not to divorce, or proceeding with divorce gracefully
Life transition (marriage, remarriage, parenthood, empty nesting)
Feeling disconnected
Blended family/step-parenting concerns
Dealing with a cancer or other diagnosis as a couple
Sexual concerns
“No-shame, no-blame” marriage counseling
We now have a coherent understanding of adult romantic love, and know that the primary source of distress between couples is when their connection to each other is threatened or inaccessible. When the answer to the question of “ARE you there for me?” (are you available, responsive, and engaged?) is increasingly “no” or “I’m not sure,” a negative cycle of interactions takes over the relationship as we protest that disconnection. I help couples to fight their negative cycle, uncover their need and longing to be close, and learn how to get their needs met without shame or blame, helping them to reconnect and develop a deep and lasting bond. I do this using a therapeutic method called Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples (EFT). (Learn more about Emotionally Focused Therapy here.)
EFT is a highly effective and research-validated method based on the latest scientific research in understanding how adult couples bond, why couples gets distressed and, most importantly, provides a map for repairing the bond and reestablishing the connection you’re longing for. It is effective with even the most distressed couples facing challenges such as infidelity and trauma. I have extensive training in this method and consistently hone my skills and knowledge through consultation, self-study and training.
The bottom line is: marriage counseling does work. I hold hope for you and your relationships, and will show you relentless empathy as I guide you through the process of building the relationship you long for.
I also offer individual counseling, either as a supplement to marriage counseling, or for those looking to work on their relationships in an individual setting.
